Subject: [ARES] Shelters Opened
Red Cross shelters have been opened in Albany, metro-Atlanta, Columbus and
Valdosta for hurricane Katrina evacuees.
Individuals can call for information about available space at open facilities and
information on any new facilities being opened. You local EMA Directors
have more details. This information is being provided so you can advise
those making inquiries about locations and how to obtain additional
information. However, according to news reports some shelters are nearing
or have met capacity. Be sure to have folks contact the Red Cross toll-free
number to verify availability.
An updated telephone number was received from the Red Cross for information
on shelter availability:
Red Cross Call Center 404-870-4440.
There are reports of non-Red Cross shelters opening as well. If you receive
inquiries, check with your local EMA about shelters opening in your
respective areas.
